John joined the Boy Scouts in 1974 as a member of Troop 21 in Tottenville, Staten Island. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout — the organization's highest honor.
Later in his adult life he served as an Assistant Scoutmaster until 2001. Chip felt very strongly about the Boy Scouts as a positive, formative part of his life, and it shaped the mentor he became to so many young people. In his honor, the foundation proudly offers scholarships to deserving Eagle Scouts pursuing a college degree.
